They’re big and they’re back from the brink of extinction! Join us at the Northwest Community College on February 22nd at 7pm for a presentation on The Return of Humpback Whales to BC’s Coast.
Presenter Jackie Hildering is a researcher with the Marine Education and Research Society and will share MERS’ research and discuss how we can work together to better understand these giants and the risks they face (for the sake of boater and whale safety). Information will include research on Humpback feeding and rate of entanglement and efforts to increase awareness around collision and what to do if entanglement is witnessed.
As an avid diver and underwater photographer, Jackie is also known as “The Marine Detective” and has recently been featured on Animal Planet’s “Wild Obsession” series and in the BBC productions “New threat to Canada’s Pacific humpback whales?” and “Ingenious Animals”. The North Coast Cetacean Research Initiative will also share a brief update on some local work being done on the North Coast regarding humpback whales, with specific focus on how you are participate in citizen science and conservation of these animals in Chatham Sound.
