Event Details

Are you naturally curious? Join 9 inquisitive individuals for a nine night, eight day, exploration of the natural world with leading professors by land, sea and air during Ecology Week at the Cassiar Cannery.

The Cassiar Cannery is located within the heart of the Skeena River Estuary – a hotbed of marine and terrestrial biodiversity – and within the Great Bear Rainforest, the largest tract of protected rainforest in the world.

Each day, we will learn about a different topic led by leading doctorate level professors. During Ecology Week 2018, we will learn:

Day 1: Arrival

Day 2: The Saltmarsh and the Secret Lives of Plants

Day 3: Coastal Forests, Lichens and Fungi and the Secret Lives of Lichens

Day 4: Tributary, River and Ocean – tracing a watershed by jet boat

Day 5: Marine Invertebrates and the Secret Lives of Intertidal Creatures

Day 6: Birding and Big Canoe Adventure

Day 7: Traditional Plant Use – Medicinal and Edible Plants and Learn to Weave Cedar

Day 8: Intimate Grizzly Viewing Experience in the Khutzeymateen Valley

Day 9: Departure after Breakfast

Ecology Week is a one-of-a-kind, experiential learning program taught by passionate, knowledgeable people who make science fun and accessible. We cover a lot of ground over nine days and it culminates in a fly-in to one of the most spectacular places in Canada – the Khutzeymateen Valley, Canada’s first grizzly bear sanctuary, to a floating lodge for lunch then onto a zodiac for an intimate viewing experience.

The Cassiar Cannery is located 30 minutes south of Prince Rupert in beautiful Northwestern British Columbia. We are accessible by road (15 minutes off Highway 16) and through daily flights to Prince Rupert and Terrace, BC from Vancouver. You can also take VIA Rail right here or ride BC Ferries famed Inside Passage route from Vancouver Island.
